Research Seminar - Dr. Nguyen Trong Thanh Presents the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) Method

At 1:00 p.m. on August 20, 2026, in Room A101, the Faculty of Business Administration, Ton Duc Thang University, organized a research seminar featuring Dr. Nguyen Trong Thanh, who presented the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method.

During the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Trong Thanh introduced Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a non-parametric analytical method based on linear programming that is widely used to assess the relative efficiency of decision-making units. DEA identifies the best-performing units to construct an “efficient frontier,” thereby enabling researchers to compare performance, determine efficiency gaps, and establish benchmarks for less efficient units.

The seminar also provided an overview of the development of DEA, from the conventional CCR and BCC models to more advanced approaches capable of examining multi-stage and multi-period processes. In particular, the Dynamic Network Slacks-Based Measure model extends the analytical capacity of DEA by incorporating interdependencies among operational stages, carry-over variables, and changes in efficiency over time. This approach offers a more comprehensive representation of business operations than models that evaluate only a single aggregate outcome.

Building on this methodological foundation, DEA can be applied to simultaneously examine innovation efficiency, sustainability efficiency, and profitability performance. Research directions related to corporate social responsibility (CSR), environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, and national cultural values further demonstrate that corporate performance should be assessed from multiple dimensions rather than solely through financial indicators. Accordingly, researchers can gain deeper insights into how firms transform innovation-related resources into economic value and sustainable development outcomes.

The seminar concluded with a lively discussion, providing an opportunity for the speaker and participants to exchange perspectives on the DEA method and its potential applications in corporate efficiency research. The event contributed to updating participants’ knowledge of quantitative research methodologies while broadening research directions in innovation, sustainable development, and business performance at the Faculty of Business Administration.
